55 Words

Mrs. Carter gave me a couple of books for Christmas. They are collections of short stories--very short stories. In fact, they have only 55 words each. Well, no more than 55 words.

They are very interesting, to say the least. It is a good exercise in writing to try to get a plot, characters and conflict to be interesting and complete in 55 words.

I tried, though. See what you think.

The Fourth Horseman

Plague.

Pestilence.

Famine.

Me.

Crosshairs are still visible when I close my eyes, now. So are my enemies.

Not enemies—targets.

There's one (so far, I can still tell which ones are real) now.

Breathe—stop—squeeze...

<<"CRACK!">>

The target is down, head obliterated.

The recoil offers no comfort. I need none.

I am Death.

55 word stories read like novel haiku's.

But I bet if you print it there are a lot of Army guys that will read it.

Providing you use stick figures for illustrations.

And explain the 3 and 4 syllable words.

hoo rah!

;-)

Good story, Buzz. Probably wont please the liberal academia...but good story.

Just a question...if it is meant to be an outline, what is the conclusion? Is it a documentary? What is the ending? Impact?

Shows how much you know. The word is "HOOAH!" And if I have to explain it to you, you wouldn't understand.

No, it is not meant to be an outline, though I suppose it could be the beginning of one. Nor is it meant to be a documentary.

The impact is 165 grains of soft-point, match-grade, .30 caliber lead at about 2000 fps.

OK...since you want to get all picky...hua...hoooah...is "heard and understood"...correct?

Which makes it all kinds of Hau backwards...right?

Impact of the story goober...sheesh....

As I said, if I have to explain, you wouldn't understand.

And as for the impact, that's really up to you, isn't it? What did it do for you? Did it create images in your mind? Did it create an understanding of a given segment of the population? I refuse to pander to the critics. My writing, such as it is, is for me, and me alone. Any enjoyment (or lack thereof) you might get out if it is a bonus, wonderful and brilliant (or not, in the case of "lack of"), but a bonus nonetheless. I don't do it for that reason.

But I do crave praise, if you have any. ;-)
